Expansion

The two main parties of Uttar Pradesh, BJP-SP, have fielded candidates from Sultanpur parliamentary seat. Even after this, the political picture here is incomplete because the special player BSP has not yet opened its cards on this seat. Election figures show that only BSP decides the equation on this seat. If the party is not the winner or runner up, its candidates definitely spoil the game of some candidate or the other.

BSP was formed in 1984. For the first time in 1989, the party fielded Ram Shabad from Sultanpur seat. Although he did not win, he registered a strong presence of BSP by securing 11.23 votes in the very first election. In the 1991 elections, the party fielded Paras Nath Verma. In this election, the party’s vote percentage increased to 14.04, but the candidate slipped to fourth place. In 1996, BSP candidate Moeed Ahmed stood third by getting 18.61 percent votes, but his strong fight weakened SP’s Kamruzzama Fauzi who was in second place.

Similarly, in 1998, Moeed Ahmed stood third by getting 21.09 votes. Due to this, SP candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi lost the election. Jai Bhadra Singh in 1999 and Mohammad Tahir Khan in 2004 became MPs by winning from BSP. In 2009, Tahir Khan again remained the runner up by getting more than two lakh votes. In 2014, when BSP fielded Pawan Pandey, he also finished second. In 2019, Chandrabhadra Singh from BSP got the highest number of votes on this seat, but due to a direct contest, he lost by a small margin.
